You are referring to the sales tax in NY. There is also an income tax. The sales tax for NYC is composed of: NYS Tax: 4.00% Metro. Commuter tax: 0.375% NYC local sales tax: 4.500% Total sales tax: 8.875% Clothing and shoes under $110 is tax free.

The state sales tax is 4%. Every county as well as a few cities have an additonal percentage. Clothing under $110 is not taxed by the state, but can still be taxed by the county or city. So in many counties, clothing is taxed at a lower rate than everything else. Most grocery food, medicines, newspapers and magazines are not taxed. If you're really into it, here is the book that the state publishes for businesses on sales tax. http://www.tax.state.ny.us/pdf/publications/sales/pub750_208.pdf

There shouldn't be because it is installed as a permanent fixture in the house. A repair would be taxable, an install would not. Very complicated.

Not legally. Just as in any other country, foreign citizens in the U.S. must have a work visa to work...and that requires a contract from an employer who sponsors your work visa. So, unless you have a green card or a work visa, you would be working illegally.
3 :
Illegally, you could probably find someone who will hire you. It would have to be at a mom and pop bar. Legally, practically impossible. 1st off Brits are ineligible for the green card lottery (too many Brits already working in the US) and second you wouldn't qualify for an H1B visa. Bartenders aren't considered "skilled" workers. However, you may want to rethink doing it if you plan on doing it illegally. Unless you haven't heard, there is an issue in the US with illegal immigrants (some estimates are as high as 10% of the US population is illegal). The INS is severely cracking down. If caught, you will be sent to an INS detention center. You could be there for many many months until your case comes up. At that point you will be summarily deported.
4 :
You could if you were working for example Hilton or Marriott or the Ritz Carlton and you were to transfer from the UK to here. Otherwise, not so much.

Assuming that it is legal for you to work here, there is a healthy sized British population in the west village around Greenwich Street and West 11th. Try around there.
