How does Photography and Assisting Photographers work in New York City? rates....getting jobs

How does Photography and Assisting Photographers work in New York City? rates....getting jobs???
I am trying to figure out how you break into photojournalism and wedding photography in NYC. I am also trying to figure out how you begin to assist photographers there. rates and such are so different here (NC) and so is how you get the work. It seems impossible to get info from anyone and sometimes a gal just needs a little help. A little goes a long way and I am willing and able to put in whatever work I need once I can figure out how to begin.

you can work at a grocery store bagging groceries.

lots of places...stores, fast food, housekeeping at motels, babysitting, dog walking,. stay away from sleazy places or rougher ends of town. when u put out applications, be aware of where they are located in the city, where your bus stop is- if you plan on taking the bus- and note if there are other young people who work in a particular place u apply to. i guess what im trying to say is you are only 15, and that is not to disrespect you, in fact i do respect you for wanting to work. it's just that i would not want to see you get hurt or taken advantage of...try to apply at reputable places, such as a walmart...lots of kids your own age work there and you can build friendships too. ask school counsellors to recommend good places to apply. and good luck!

How do guest lists work at New York City clubs

How do guest lists work at New York City clubs?
I always thought that the guest list was some really difficult, HAVE TO KNOW SOMEBODY, kind of thing to get on, that got you in totally free and right into VIP. At least thats how they are in Florida. But I've heard things that say they work different in NYC. Explain them.

Well before you go, you have to call up or make a reservation then when you go in they see if you name is on the clip board if you say the right name, then your in. I think thats how it works! Hope mine is voted most! XOXOX
2 :
It's not who you know, it's who you blow.
3 :
The way Guest Lists work will depend on the club. Some clubs have exclusive lists which will list only people who make table / bottle reservations others will list the people who frequently visit the club. Now there are also other clubs who hires promoters. These promoters each have their own guest lists. Certain nights clubs don't get enough people so these promoters open their guest lists to anyone who registers on their web site. Of course dress code still applies even though you are on the list. Doormen will make the final decision if you go in or not depending on the group. Some clubs don't like all men groups. Also some lists are free and some you pay discounted admission. Here is a list of web sites where you can access the guest lists: http://www.velvetlist.com/ http://www.nightclubvip.net/directory.asp http://www.nyceclubs.com/guestlist/ http://www.clubplanet.com/US/New-York/guestlists http://partyhunter.com/ http://www.nocoverny.com/ When you enter your name on the guest list make sure to show up. If you don't they will enter your name to the no-show list and they may cancel your future reservations. Enjoy!

How can an Australian work in New York City

How can an Australian work in New York City?
I am an Australian high school teacher and I am eager to move to NYC to work. The NYC and NYS Education Departments have told me I cannot teach in NYC because of visa/SSN requirements, so I am trying to find alternative employment, but I don't know where to start. As far as I know, I can't get a visa until I have sponsorship/employment. Can anyone please help me! Thanks.

Maybe contact some private schools in NY and see if they want to sponsor you?
2 :
First, you need to find a school in New York that would be willing to sponsor you. Then start working on getting your work visa. Then after you get approved for the work visa and come to NY the first thing you'll need to do is file an I-765 for an employment authorization permit which will allow you to legally work in the US. Please file it through an immigration attorney and he or she can tell you what other documents you need to file.

Does living in New Jersey save you money if you work in New York

Does living in New Jersey save you money if you work in New York?
Correct me if I am wrong. If you work and live in New York.. you will have to pay NY City Tax + NY State Tax + Fed tax. If you live in New Jersey and work in New York instead. All you have to pay is NY State Tax + Fed tax so you will be saving on NY City Tax which could be few thousands.

What you save in NY City Tax will more than be eaten up by tolls or train fares.

I believe that the law in New York they require 1,000 hours. I think that there are ways to attend a school for the number of hours that you need and not take the entire course. There was a girl I went to college with that had worked in Texas for several years (they need less than 300 hours) and in order to work here (in Iowa) she had to attend school for only the number of class hours she was lacking, though I can't be positive it would work that way in New York. I also know that they don't use the NCETMB in NY while they do in FL, so it would also require you taking another written exam, though I don't know which one they go by. Wish I could be of more help. Good luck.

You will file a Sch C and SE with your return and you will owe taxes on this money, no matter what you found on-line. You can check out these forms at www.irs.gov and then come back with any specific questions. Helen, EA in PA

THAT IS CORRECT, YOU DON'T NEED TO REPORT THAT. THERE IS S CERTAIN AMOUNT THAT COMES TO PLAY.

a 1099 is an annual form that is given to self employed people. It shows the total amount paid from the company you worked with. If you earn more than $600 per year, and are not incorporated, you will receive this form by Jan. 31 of the following year. You will report the entire amount on your 1040 schedule C...you will pay self employment tax (Social Security and Medicare)..you will also have Federal and NY State taxes. Welcome to the club

I am married filing jointly, and when I go through my NY non-resident tax return, it taxes me on all the income my wife and I both made last year. She works in New Jersey, and I only worked in NY for half the year. Shouldn't I be taxed on just the money I made in NY?
United States - 1 Answers

If you worked in NY, you have to pay NY taxes - its a privilege of working in NY. You must file a NY non-resident tax return. You must file as married filing jointly and include your wife's name and SSN but can omit her income on the NY tax return. There is another form you fill out w2here you basically verify that your wife had no NY income. You must also pay NJ taxes because you lived in NJ. On the NJ joint tax return, you will get a credit for your NJ state taxes for the taxes you paid in NY. If you only worked in NY for half the year, you only include that amount on the NY tax return.

If you can load maps, then yes, it would work. Maybe even without loading new maps... try it out from home. I have a Garmin in California and have looked up and saved addresses on the maps in Hawaii in preparation for my next vacation.
2 :
Yes. It will give you starting location, and ending latitude longitude. I used one for several years flying an ultralight aircraft. Then the maps were expensive. Mine did not have maps. Still very handy for giving ground speed and giving directions back to airport. You need to check if your maps cover the state of Hawaii. Your unit will work anywhere in the world.
3 :
GPS stands for global postioning satellite -focus on the word Global.
4 :
Yes, it will work in Hawaii. In fact, it should work all over the planet, except in the polar regions. I have a Garmin GPS. For the maps, I use the MapSource USA Topo package which has detalied maps of all 50 states. Prior to any trip, I upload the map of the state or region I am visiting and I am ready to go. Good luck and Aloha!

Do petroleum engineers work in new york

Most are employed near the oil fields, in places like Alaska, Saudi Arabia, etc. If you don't want to travel, pick a different field. .
2 :
I am sure there are some in New York but you would more likely end up in Houston, Tulsa, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles or some foreign location. Western New York state is a great place but there are a lot of other interesting locations around the US and the world. I know, I've been there. NOTE: You don't actually have to be near an oil or gas field to do petroleum engineering work. At one time my company had it headquarters in New York City and there were numerous petroleum engineering working there.
3 :
You have to have oil & gas fields in order to have Petroleum Engineering jobs and New York is far from all oil fields and most all natural gas fields. Also, the closest Petroleum Engineering university would be Penn State. There is a new natural gas play called the Marcellus Shale which extends from West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and up into New York. However, New York has shut down all drilling at this time as they study the "environmental impact" of any new drilling. This might be remedied by the time you graduate from college. In the end the Marcellus Shale will not likely sustain natural gas producing companies for long in New York and you would have to move elsewhere for work or pick another profession.

No, because there are investment bankers all over the country
2 :
No, there aren't. One reason you get paid I-banker money is to put up with, and be able to afford, living in NY, London, Tokyo, etc.
3 :
Investment bankers are like you know what, they are all over the place, Most major cities have large banks that have investment banking departments as well as some of the major brokerage firms. You may luck out, and find some smaller banks (or B/Ds) in the burbs that do a considerable amount of Investment banking. These are catering to the growing areas that they're in, or they too wanted to get out of the rush of the big cities. You can start checking with some of the big name banks in your area or the area you may like. There is a reference book called the "Securities Dealers of North America" (the red book), the book list broker/dealers in geograhical areas, take a look at your local library, Good luck on your search, if you want bad enough you can do it.

Let's say I live in New Jersey and work in New York City. Is city tax deducted from my paycheck?
When I check out the paycheck calculator, I see that there's a section called "City tax". From that section, there's a pull down that gives the following options: "None", "New York City Resident", "Yonkers" and "Yonkers Non-Resident". If I work in NYC (Midtown Manhattan) and live in NJ, which one applies to me?

I had one answerer e-mail me. He stated that he received 1100 less in refunds because NYC tax had to be paid. It is possible that NYC was not withheld from you during the year. Save all of your stubs if you not already. The pull down menu forgot that option. If you work in Manhattan, you are going to have to pay NYC tax. Best to you. www.naea.org

You would file a non-resident return for the state of New Your along with your federal return.
2 :
Some states have a reciprocol agreement where the state you work in holds out taxes for the state you live in. For example, I live in WV but work in OH. My employer holds out WV state tax and I only file in WV. You can go to the Connecticut and New York state tax web sites and find out how they do it.
3 :
Your employer should withhold New York State taxes. The general rule of thumb for withholding is where you work. When you file your tax return, you would file: A federal return (of course) A NY nonresident return (report only your earnings in NY). A CT resident return (report everything, including your earnings in NY, you would be able to take a resident tax credit for taxes paid to NY state on your CT return)
4 :
You will withhold taxes in New York, file as a nonresident, and file (and pay) taxes in Connecticut. Ask your payroll department for how much to withhold. I've linked below to a blog post that clears things up further.

I am not aware of such writings, but this is a personal decision for each person who chooses to stay in ANY metro area. It just stands to reason, however, that our major cities with the high-value targets will almost certainly again be targeted. This is how terrorists gain strength...they make a big "splash" for the greatest publicity with the least investment. That is much more likely to occur in such places as New York City.
4 :
As a New Yorker I can only ask is it rational to live and work any where else? Califronia: Earthquakes and a Governor who talk funny Texas: The death penalty for speeding Florida: Hurricanes and the inability to count Iraq: If your neighbors don't kill you, your family will Iran: See above Minnesota: So much snow and an ex-governor who talks funny England: Bad Teeth, Bad Weather, bad Food Maryland: My son's mother. Colordao: School shotings and the most indept police force ever (hey guys Jon bennets mother did it...geez) China: No Freedom, too many people Seriously I could go on and on but the real answer was given more then 50 years ago by FDR "We have nothing to fear but fear itself" So if you are a New Yorker, man up and deal with it. I rather have New York be the target then some poor city that can't take it. We're tough around here 9-11 showed that. Knock us down and we will get right back up and spit in your eye

Work in New York City, live in New Jersey. Don't own a home. Which state do I file taxes for?
I live in New Jersey, I'm Single and live with my parents so I don't pay rent. However I work and receive all of my income from New York. I've also changed jobs towards the end of last year but both jobs were located in New York City. Should I file for New York or New Jersey?

Lucky you-you'll probably need to file both. You'll need to file the NY return as a non-resident (I believe there's a NYC income tax return as well). Then, when you file NJ, there should be a form to attach that will show NJ how much income tax you've already paid to NY. It will be kind of a pain, unless you're really good with tax stuff. If you're not, a Jersey preparer will be able to help you without too much difficulty. Of, if you're a hands on kind of guy, buy Turbo Tax, get your NJ state download for free, then pay for the NY download (I think it's about $30). TurboTax can handle a multi-state return reasonably well.
2 :
new jersey
3 :
I believe there is also a NYC tax, so you will have to file that also.
4 :
You must file in both New York and New Jersey. You are a resident of New Jersey and need to file a non-resident return for NY State (IT-203). You pay taxes on the income you earned in NY and get a credit for that amount when you file in NJ. On your NJ return, you would be responsible for the taxes on things like taxable interest and investments, which would not be taxable in NY.
5 :
You need to file both.
6 :
New York City taxes are included as part of the NY state return, so you don't need to file a separate NYC return. You will need to file a NY return as a nonresident, and a New Jersey return as your primary state income tax. You should probably do the NY State return first, as the amount you have to pay to New York (state and city) may be deductible from from your New Jersey return.

2 :
There's basically every job imaginable in NYC - all of which have different qualifications. It's absurdly expensive to live there though, so I wouldn't really recommend just moving there without a better idea of what you're going to do.

Best ways to live and work in New York for a British female

Best ways to live and work in New York for a British female?
I'm a student in the UK. I would very much like to live and work in New York City after my final year for as long as possible. I would like to know all the options there are to be able to do this. I'm a New Media student in my final year, but I would like to become a presenter or painter...ambitious dream.

Are you 18 to 26? If so, you could start out in the Au Pair Program. http://411newyork.org/guide/2007/04/22/the-au-pair-program/ http://www.aupairinamerica.com/ You get free boarding and pocket money. The only thing is, to work, you would need a "work visa" but being from teh UK, the process will easier for you.
2 :
I don't know why being a "British Female" would change anything (as long as you had a visa to live in the U.S.) You would probably live just like other young people in NYC: You'd get an apartment in one of the outer boroughs - probably Queens or Brooklyn, with or without a roommate. Where you worked would depend on what kind of visa you had. If you had a green card, you could work anywhere, and then you would end up doing much of the same kinds of things that young people do in NYC - bar-tending, waiting tables, etc. while you looked for the job of your dreams. If you had a special visa (like a J-3 or a J-4) you'd have limits on what you would be allowed to do. But the truth is, it's hard to get work here right now because of the recession. All young people are having trouble finding jobs.

This is something you would have to discuss with a good injury lawyer , preferably a reference from a knowledgible individual, not a TV advertiser. You have to check with the state to review your options.
2 :
Likely nothing - you don't get pain and suffering for workers comp, and it would depend on how much it impairs your future ability to work. If you're not a musician, You can likely function just as well without it. Even though I'm sure you miss it a lot.
3 :
Whether you would get anything from anybody beyond whatever it takes to stop the bleeding, depends upon whose fault it is. If there were safety violations, you might have a case. If it was your own fault, maybe nothing. You have not provided any details for anyone to guess. And what happened to the fingertip, that it could not be sewn back on.

I think it will work, but you should check some things... a. The frequency of your Nokia 73.Most americans cell providers works at the frequency 1900Mhz.Check your phone specification,if it has or it is said to be QUAD phone,it will surely work. b. If you want to use it there with your current Bangladesh simcard/number you should contact your provider to activate INTERNATIONAL ROAMING and ensure that your provider has roaming partner provider in new work or usa in common.

what is DUI expungment? How does it work in New york state

what is DUI expungment? How does it work in New york state?
A friend of mine was arrested for DUI last year in new york state, but was not convicted. Would expungement mean that he waits for a couple of years, then applies to have this DUI removed off the record? How does this work in New york state?
Law & Ethics - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
You or he can try it but its not as easy as you think. If he was a minor its a possibility if not I'd forget it. DUI laws and getting them expunged have drastically changed. Good luck but I think your friend will just have to live with it for now and forever unfortunately.
2 :
expungement means its clear of his record. His record has been altered in a favorable manner! Expungement begins by determining which type of relief is appropriate. The law will vary from state to state so he should consult his lawyer about the expungement. The type of expungement that will apply in his case will depend upon whether he was a juvenile or an adult at the time of the conviction; whether the conviction was for a misdemeanor or a felony; and whether he was placed on probation or went to state prison as part of the punishment. Did his lawyer draft motion????? Because normally for it to be expunged his lawyer would have to draft. The expungement motion will be filed with the court that sentenced him, and will also have to be served on the prosecutor and, in some cases, the probation department. To get an Order of Expungement, the court must be convinced that he has led an honest and upright life, and the interests of justice would be served by granting the request. Hope this helps!!!!

Where to find any information about fashion designers' contests in New York City

Where to find any information about fashion designers' contests in New York City?
My mother is a fashion designer who specializes in women̢۪s outerwear clothing (coats and jackets). She has 20 years experience in this position, in which time she had her own company in Russia. Currently, she is working in New York city, and she wants to produce women's outerwear clothing here, but we don't know to whom we should show samples of her work and drawings. She heard that there are some contests in New York, where people would send pictures or drawings of their work, but we don't know where, when, and how it happens?

In today's sad world, they may think previous experience in NY means: 1) there is less chance you are a terrorist; 2) you have experience and patience in dealing with other cultures in a polite and expeditious fashion; 3) they may be conscientious about checking your references and don't want to spend a lot of time and money doing it; 4) you are more flexible about work hours; 5) you understand how to behave in a given job in a given part of the city.
2 :
Maybe they just meant that you should have some work experience in restaurant field to be considered and not necessarily in New York.
3 :
Work in a New York restaurant and you'll figure it out.

International Student looking for work in New York

International Student looking for work in New York?
I want to spend a few months in New York studying for my Emergency Medical Technicians qualification. I would however need a job to support me. How easy is it for an international student from the UK to find work in New York? I don't require much money, just enough to take care of my basic living needs. I'm probably thinking about working as a low level postion at hospital, perhaps in basic nursing or maybe in customer service, retail or at a restaurant as a waitor. In fact, I'm open to ideas.

Perhaps you can try the local restaurant and apply as either a host or server (term 'server' now sometimes used instead of 'waiter' or 'waitress' :) The job application may ask if you are a US citizen, and perhaps you can ask management about how to secure employment while being an International Student. (Please steer clear from those online 'job opportunites' as most are Not legit especially if asking for money upfront.) For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and search 'emergency medical technician' or such. There may be other resources listed at the bottom of that entry. For US colleges: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ and perhaps you can find out from the particular college that you are attending about the process of International students attending college as well as employment.

Probably not. Most such licenses, unlike Driver's Licenses, are restricted to the state they were issued in. However, if you already have a NY license, they may have a fast-track way of getting your NJ license without having to go through too many hurdles to get it. Good luck, and the link below is to the webpage for the New Jersey Board Of Nursing who would probably be the one to issue the NJ license for you...

Best way to answer is what I was told by the IRS. I run My own truck and live in South Carolina. The company I have my current contract with is in North Carolina but i also deliver products with my truck to company's all over this Great USA. IRS simply asked where is your BASE of operation ,meaning where do you keep your files and home. Told them South Carolina. Then I would pay my normal IRS taxes and file state taxes with only South Carolina.
2 :
You pay taxes in the state in which you reside. It is as simple as that.
3 :
The IRS is not the best authority on STATE tax issues. You need to check with someone in the state tax office of the states you do business in. In your situation, I would say you only owe Massachusetts taxes. If you drove to New York and did work IN New York, I would say you might owe NY taxes, on that income only. You would also include that income on the MA return, but get a credit for the taxes paid to NY. To Ash79: Taxes returns are usually filed in the state you live in AND the state you work in. You usually get a credit for the taxes paid to the non-resident state on the resident state tax return.

You could always live in Jersey City and drive into NYC every day. Jersey City is right across the way from New York and is even sometimes referred to as the "sixth borough."
