How can I go about finding part time, evening social work jobs in New York City?

check out the listings at brc.org fegs.org cucs.org Most have residential programs that need evening assistance also the postgraduate center has a clubhouse that is open in the evenings and other programs as well http://www.pgcmh.org/
2 :
The previous answer was good. You can also check CraigsList.org (select your city and then search within jobs or browse nonprofit and health sections -- these tend to have the most IP social work jobs). If you're looking for more of a macro job you might want to contact people you know in academic social work circles for contact work such as data collection, interviews, etc, that could be done after hours.

Who cares? Inner cities are the realm of democrats mostly. Did you know that the average number of murders in blue counties in the US is 13.2 per 100,000? The average number of murders in red counties is 2.1 per 100,000. The real question is why are democrats more than 6 times as likely to be murderers as conservatives? Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning the most recent Presidential election: Population of counties won: by Gore, 127 million; by Bush, 143 million; Square miles of land won: by Gore, 580,000; by Bush, 2,427,000; States won: by Gore, 19; by Bush, 29; Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won: by Gore, 13.2; by Bush, 2.1. Professor Olson adds, "In aggregate, the map of the territory Bush won was (mostly) the land owned by the tax-paying citizens of this great country. Gore's territory encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off government welfare.." Olson believes the U.S. is now somewhere between the "apathy" and the "complacency" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy; with some 40 percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.

no. there is no such thing Edit.. to clarify... You can get a NYC earned income tax credit that you file with your state. refer to link below HOWEVER my first answer is correct there is NOT a seperate tax filing for the city you file it with your state taxes.
2 :
Yes if you also live there - check your W-2 to see if they withheld NYCity tax.
3 :

4 :
The NYC income tax now extends to anyone living or working in the city. It's a "commuter tax" if you live outside of the city and the city income tax if you live and work there.

Do I have to pay New York City Income Tax if I work in New York CIty but live outside out it?

United States - 3 Answers

1 :
The answer is no, as now only NYC residents are subject to NYC income tax. I believe (but am not certain) that an exception for that applies if your are a NYC city worker and live outside the city.
2 :
NO. The only non-residents subject to NYC tax are city employees.
3 :
Most people living outside the City are not subject to NYC personal income tax. However, non-city residents who are Employees of New York City must file Form 1127 and pay taxes each year. The amount is equal to the personal income tax they would owe if they were City residents.

3 :
Techincally you can't. But the reality is that you sure can find a job in new york without a social security number. Especially new york. Maria -- I'm going to assume you're a female. you can work at any family owned shop, you can be a live-in maid or a weekly maid (upper/middle-middle class people looking to live the high lives always hire people even if they're illigallly in this country) There are a ton of things to do in New York without a social --- and dont you dare let them try to rip you off and pay you low -- as a live in maid you should be making at least 60$ a day. Anything else -- at least 5-10$ an hour. And compared to legal workers -- that's nothing.
4 :
As long as you are not a citizen, have no union, never voted ,speak no known language, and have no address you will find all the work you need in N.Y.

How does one work in the New York Stock Exchange as a trader

How does one work in the New York Stock Exchange as a trader?
I would love to be a trader. How does somebody get that job to work on the floor of the NYSE?
Investing - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
To buy a seat on the exchange is very expensive. The cost varies but it has sold for between 750K and 4 million over the past 10 years. An easier route is to get a job with a brokerage company that has seats.
2 :
Do you literally mean you want to be the broker who executes the trades for other people? Or do you want to be a trader? If you just want to be a trader then you just need to make a stock dealing account as a nominee and the broker you choose will execute the decisions you make in the NYSE instead of having to do it yourself physically.
3 :
What degree do you have, what school is it from and where is your MBA from?
4 :
The NYSE doesn't employ traders. They are employed by member firms, and most of them work from screens in offices. You need to get a job with them. They like their trainees to be college athletes because that show competitive spirit, although all firms don't feel this way.

If I live in New York and work in NJ, Do I have to pay tax both in NJ and NY

If I live in New York and work in NJ, Do I have to pay tax both in NJ and NY?
How does this work? I know certain states don't have state tax but If I work at a state with no state tax but live in a state that does, do I have to pay state taxes?
United States - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
States with no income tax withholding on wages: Alaska Florida Nevada New Hampshire South Dakota Tennessee Texas Washington Wyoming If you are a permanent resident of one of the states above, but you work in one of the other 41 states, then you almost always will have the other state's income tax withheld from your paycheck. Then again, you may be able to file a non-resident tax return for that state and get some of it back. Depends on the state.
2 :
I used to work in NJ and live in NY. I had to pay both taxes (filed forms with both), but one state CREDITS the other (depending on which you are having deducted from you pay) and you should not pay more taxes that you would if you worked and lived in the same state. Not sure, but I would think if you worked in a state with no taxes, but lived in a state that had income tax, you would still need to pay your state's tax...after all, you are using their state services just by living there. (But if you are talking about NJ & NY, this example does not work because they both sure tax you!!)
3 :
File a NJ Non-Resident return lising ONLY the income earned in NJ and pay any tax due. Then file a NY Resident return listing all income from all sources. You will get a credit on your NY return for the NJ taxes paid (not "depending upon which tax was withheld" as another poster stated). You aren't taxed twice but the net effect is that you will pay state tax at the higher of the 2 states' rates. Some states have reciprocity agreements that normally stipulate that residents are only taxed in their home state. NJ & PA have such an agreement. NY and NJ do not, at least the last time I checked.

What constitutes a hostile work environment in New York state

What constitutes a hostile work environment in New York state?
More specifically, what kinds of emotional abuse can constitute a hostile work enviornment. If a supervisor frequently humiliates a worker in front of others, asks personal questions, implies they think the employee is stupid, goes into rages, glares at an employee, etc., can that be considered a hostile work environment?
Law & Ethics - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Yes. Bullying of any type is consider hostile. A supervisor doesn't have to be the bully, but beware: many times the lower ranked employee is cheaper to replace than higher ranked, and most usually, the higher ranked employee gets the benefit for economic reasons. Whatever you do, choose your words and actions carefully.
2 :
Hostile work environment must be based on one of the prohibited factors, meaning race, religion, national origin, gender (sexual harassment), color, ethnicity. Under case law usually an isolated incident will not give rise to a cause of action for hostile work conditions, unless it was very egregious. Like a racial slur or something physical. However, most cases of hostile environment is based on pervasive conduct; insulting remarks, but it has been going on for a long time. Months, for instance. Comments or implication like you are stupid, stated overtime, in front of others may be grounds for hostile work conditions. The person causing the hostile work conditions does not have to be a superior, but that helps. It can be a co-worker, but in that case you have to notify the boss first, unless he knew or should have known; before you should sue, otherwise they will have a defense. If you are a victim of hostile work conditions, call your local EEOC (A federal agency which deals with workplace violations, they are very good/Equal Employment Opportunity Comission). They also have state agencies, addressing the same thing. It will not cost you anything and they will investigate, if you win you collect damages.

You have to get a company to sponsor you so you can get a work permit. Without a work permit you're pretty much screwed. It would be hard to get a company to sponsor you right now because so many american workers are out of jobs, most companies won't even consider hiring somene who isn't an american citizen right now.
2 :
Now is not the time I'm afraid. I've been trying to get into the US for the last 3 years without success, and I'm pretty qualified. Now with the recession, its almost impossible. I think Canada or Australia are your only options at this moment.
3 :
Unfortunately with unemployment reaching 14% in the states it's nearly impossible for foreigners to get work visa's. You'll need to check the immigration laws. Without a sponsor and work permit, you will only be allowed to stay in the states for 90 days, and you will not be able to work during that time. Even if one of you gets a job in the states you both are not allowed to come on that one visa. .. both of you will need to do this.. since you can't sponsor each other. BTW.. ny is EXTREMELY expensive. Unless you are both professionals with decent salaries, you won't be able to afford a decent apartment in the city. Maybe Brooklyn or queens or bunk with a few roomates. Start checking immigration laws for work visas, residency requirements etc. You just can't get off the plane and live here.

TP will pay to both entities. Eg, city and state tax in PA and city and state tax in NY. NY, since he's a resident, may give him credit for money paid to another jurisdiction.
2 :
you will need to file state returns in both states, one will be a non resident return for the state you do not reside in there will be taxes in both states however most often, there are credits on one state for taxes paid to another state you definitely will need help with this unless you know something about tax preparation
3 :
Both states; plus federal, Socail Security, Medicare. NY and PA do not have reciprocal income agreements so income tax withholding should be withheld from the state where the employee works (PA), plus any applicable localities. Because there are no reciprocal agreements, NY will also want their money, even though it's not earned in the state. To alleviate double taxation, the employee will get a tax credit for taxes paid to PA. But, due to the higher income tax rate in NY, there will be tax shortfall in NY. See if the employer can withhold taxes for both states; otherwise, the employee may have to make quarterly estimated payments to NY to cover the difference. The employee will have file tax returns for federal, PA (nonresident return reporting only earnings earned there); and NY return (resident return reporting everything plus a credit for taxes paid to PA)

How do the New York Streets work

How do the New York Streets work?
How do they work in the city? I mean the numbers and avenues and streets?
New York City - 3 Answers

1 :
Streets are numeric from South to North and Avenues from East to West.
2 :
NYC is on a grid.. well except a couple of areas. Most of NYC is composed of horizontal lines and vertical lines. The horizontal lines are streets. When going north, the street numbers increase. They stay consistent on both Upper East Side and Upper West Side (Both sides of central park). The vertical lines are avenues. It goes from 1st Avenue to 12th Avenue... starting with 1st avenue which is on east side of the map, going to 12th avenue which is on west side of map. There are also other avenues in between, but those are the very basic ones.
3 :
Ugh it is soooo complicated in NYC. But the streets pretty much go in order like 42 street is parallel to 43 street, but intersecting with them could be 2 and 3. lol i don't know if this will help much, when we went, it was a school field trip and they gave us a printed map, which i lost. :( hope this link helps at least a bit! http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl :)

Hire a tax professional for this, since you do not know what you are doing. Screwing this up will make your life miserable for YEARS.
2 :
You have to file a tax return in both states. You will receive a credit in NY for the taxes paid to CT (based on your tax return, not the amount that was withheld). The bad news is that NY has a higher tax rate than CT so it is likely that you will owe some money to NY with the tax return. You will also have to pay interest on the amount you owe. Also, if you didn't file for an extension on or before April 15th, then you will owe penalties. I hope this helps. Gary

4 :
You will first fill out a Connecticut Non-Resident Return. Then when it's done, you will fill out a New York State Resident Return. On the New York return, you will take a credit for the taxes that you've already paid to New York. This in effect eliminates double taxation and you ultimately pay the rate of the higher state.
5 :
You must file in both taxes. When you file your New York State return, you can claim a "resident credit" for tax paid to Connecticut on income earned while living in New York State. As a result, the total tax paid to both states (tax paid to NY plus tax paid to CT) will not be more than if you paid tax only to NY. If you live in Yonkers, then be sure to complete the section related to Yonkers city income tax when you file your New York state tax return.
6 :
your tax home is where you work unless for short, temporary assignments if your Cn job is more or less permanent, you file Cn State return but you will have to file a NY non resident or part time because there are some local taxes due since you actually live there

Just get to New York and go to every restaurant and tell them you are willing to wash dishes. Today. You can get the media industry job later. A hotel room will be $129 for a tiny tiny room in an old building. Ask if you can sleep in the restaurant for a few nights.... like a night watchman.

You need to be prepared and have an exit plan. Also you will need support financially and otherwise. work visa - working in new york

work visa - working in new york?
how easy is it for a Canadian to get a work Visa to work in the US? I'd like to go to New York for a few months and work, but I probably wouldn't find a position until after I get there. How difficult is it to get a Visa in this case? I know other countries like the UK and Australia will pretty much allow any Canadian under 30, but is this true of the US too?
New York City - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
With unemployment in the US at or above 10% there aren't a lot of job openings unless you have some special skills. You might need the job in order to get the visa.
2 :
For a Canadian citizen to move to the USA, there is a backdoor system. Where you just go up to the border with a job offer letter from a US employer, pay US$56.00 and they stamp your passport and you are good for three years. And there is no limit to the number of times you can get a new visa for another three years. The catch is that you can only do this if you have a degree in certain fields. This is called “TN Status”. It is not really a visa and while on it you CANNOT apply for US permanent immigration. For a list of eligible degrees and skills look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TN_Visa If you indicate you are planning on a permanent stay, you will be denied entry. This is only for temporary work. If you want to stay in the US permanently the choice is not up to you but up to your employer. If they feel you are worth it, they can spend about $5,000 on you for an H-1B visa. This is good for 3 years and can be renewed once. However, once you are on H-1B visa, then the employer can apply for a green card for to allow you to stay in the US permanently and eventually become a citizen. This will cost them about $12,000 and takes from 3 to 10 years depending on your degree and the backlog. However, once you have been initially accepted, your H-1B will be extended indefinitely until the green card comes through. Myself, I moved to LA in 2001 on a TN, got my H-1B in 2005 and my green card priority date is May 2008. If you do not qualify for a TN visa, you will not be able to get any other kind of employment visa either as you will not pass the labor certification. Once you are good to go on a TN see www.goodbyecanada.com for relocation information. The next most popular way to move to the US is to marry a US citizen. The US citizen has to be over 21 and making more than 125% of a poverty line income to sponsor you. You can become a famous entertainer and be sponsored by a US entertainment company. Like Celine Dion did. If you have a parent, brother, sister of child that are over 21 years old that are a US citizen, they can sponsor you. Canadians do not qualify for the diversity lottery or refugee status in the US. Also note that 180 days after you move to the USA, you lose your Canadian medical coverage and are at the mercy of the US private medical insurance industry. The thing to remember is that they cannot ask you about pre-existing conditions if you already have medical insurance. And your Canadian Medicare, until it expires, is considered valid prior insurance coverage. My point is that you must enroll in US medical insurance before your first 180 days in the US is over.

Very few people. I can represent homebuyers in NY or CT. NY is more costly that CT, and the beauty of Connecticut is hard to equal. So unless you already live in NY when you found your Job that happened to be in CT, you would not plan it that way. You are not going to move to NY to live if you have already have a job in CT....unless you are 19 and want to live in NYC...at that age it is a different story...I was thinking of choices for people with families. What are some good restaurants to work for in New York City

What are some good restaurants to work for in New York City?
I'm moving to New York from California and am looking to try waitressing . I don't have any practical experience working in restaurants but I am kind of doing an independent study (from a book) on being a professional server in a fine dining establishment. Anybody know of any places that might be a good training ground for a beginner like me?

Most Upscale restaurants wont start you out as a server if you don't have experience (in a rest). Your best bet is to get a job as a busser or runner...and work yourself up. Although a busser isn't a great job in the better restaurants you can still make around the mid 50's. If you are a quick learner and hard working it shouldnt take long for you to work up to runner then to server.
3 :
As a former head chef I could tell you that those positions are highly competitive and most high end restaurants prefer experienced servers. Your best bet is to get a New York yellow pages and make some calls. You might just get lucky. Good luck to you in your endeavor.

please find list below.

I would advise starting in a chain restaurant (tgi fridays, applebees, etc) to get some experience. most of them require less experience compared to upscale restaurants to get in. also I think another answerer suggested starting out as a busser, food runner or host and work your way up. really if you have common sense and are not afraid of hard work that can make up for lack of experience for many employers. good luck!

02 will, you might have to ring customer care to set up roaming if you've never done it before. Depends on the handset too though, customer care should be able to tell you that too. Don't make calls unless you have to, it costs a fortune! Texts aren't too bad

Before you worry about a realtor license, you should worry about a visa that permits you to work in the U.S., unless you have done that already. Having a realtor license won't do you much good if you're not allowed to run a business and/or sell U.S. properties.

G'day Steffany E, Thank you for your question. There is a union called the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and Moving Picture Machine Operators. I don't whether you have to join it but it has 76,000 members so membership is probably fairly common in New York theatre. Regards

Oh yeah. As the man says. What he didn't mention is that you have to be born into the union. If you don't have a relative who is a member, forget it.

Live in New Jersey work in New York City. Taxes

Live in New Jersey work in New York City. Taxes?
I live in Hudson County, New Jersey, but work in Manhattan. About 5% of my paycheck is deducted for state taxes. Will I get any of this back? What will I have to pay for New Jersey state taxes? I know a lot of people commute like this so if anyone that can explain the tax situation please help!! Thanks.

You will have to report all of your income on a NJ resident return. You will report the NY sourced part of you wage on a NY Non resident return. You will compute a tax credit on your NJ return for the tax paid to NY. However, since NY has a higher tax rate on income, the credit will be limited to the amount computed by using the NJ rate. IN all likelihood, you will not owe any Nj tax on the NY part of your wages. I don't know what state taxes they are deducting but I will guess it is NY. If that is the case, you probably will breakeven on your NJ return if all of your wages earned were from the NY job. This can get complicated. You should have a tax pereparer do the work this year due to the multi state issues involved.

It should. I see it on TV all the time here. http://www.metropcs.com/coverage/ (Enter address you plan to stay) http://www.metropcs.com/metrolocal/new_york/ (MetroPCS | NY) If your phone is old, you could have (no service/drop calls) problems. I had that when I was with Sprint and didn't have a dual mode phone. When I got a newer phone, my service improved over my 6 year old phone. You can always go to Walgreens and grab $10 phone to use. You can then sell it when you are done or keep it for you next trip.
2 :
Yes, it does. You may have to change the roam option on your phone from "MetroPCS Only" to "Automatic."

can you please tell me how the streets in new york work

can you please tell me how the streets in new york work?
what does it mean when someone says east 57th street? all information would be most helpful thank you
New York City - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
The streets in NYC are numbered, and 5th ave makes east and west, west is towards Hudson river, and east towards East river.
2 :
In mManhattan the streets followed no sense of order until a plan was devised in 1812 to fix that. above 14th Street things are pretty regular with the numbered streets running east west and only numbered streets. The blocks are twenty to a mile. Fifth Ave divides east from west for the most part. Avenues run North South and are numbered from East to West, but there are exceptions Lexington and Madison Aves fit in between Third and Fourth, now Park , And Fourth and Fifth, respectively. These blocks are much longer than the blocks between streets. When you get above 57th street avenues start to be less regular. Names change and more avenues are introduced.
3 :
5th Avenue divides Manhattan into "west" and "east". An address that is "east" is lower than 5th avenue (e.g., 3rd Avenue, Park Avenue, Lexington Av)
4 :
Well, briefly, below 14th Street it's a maze of streets going every which way, but above 14th it's very orderly, with numbered streets from 14th all the way up to 220th or so, and it's all divided into East and West by the famous Fifth Avenue. Take a look at the map at the link, below and it will all make sense. Good luck!... ☺
5 :
The streets are numbered sequentially from south to north. For example, 57th Street is the street that is one block north of 56th Street and one block south of 58th Street. The part between the Hudson River and 5th Avenue is called "west". The part between 5th Avenue and the East River is called "east".

at age of 14, you can work in an office, grocery store, retail store, restaurant, movie theater or amusement park
2 :
Here's a short list of jobs in the U.S., Canada and Europe which you can create to generate income: 1. Learn calligraphy so that you can provide handwritten invitations and thank you notes to prospective wedding parties, birthday celebrations, etc. Seek out clients through wedding planners at nearby churches and temples. A starter calligraphy kit usually runs around $20 and anyone can easily pick up this skill. The going rate is usually $1 per hand addressed item. 2. Seek from your neighbors a gardner position which involves planting, weed removal, plant/tree trimming, light brush clearance. You will be using the neighbor's equipment and tools. Again, do not represent yourself as a lawn mower since there are any number of safety issues involved. A door-to-door solicitation of surrounding neighbors is required and you can charge between $6 to $9 per hour. 3. Offer policing/removal or clearance of trash services to surrounding neighbors which involve trash pickup within nearby residential area. Limit the extent of pickup to small areas and be aware that there are no hazardous terrain or elements involved in this process. Again, a door-to-door solicitation of neighbors is in order. You can charge between $6.75 to $7.50 per hour. 4. Acquire a set of window cleaning tools [a bucket, liquid window cleaner, sponge, squeegee, handle with an extension and a small step ladder] and solicit local businesses for your window cleaning services. However, be careful to limit the height of the window cleaning to no higher than one story. Charge $1 per window panel. 5. Visit your nearest beauty salon and ask to be trained as a shampoo person who is also willing to sweep up fallen hair on the ground and do set ups [arranging dye kits, curler holders, etc.] for a set hourly fee. 6. Become a sign flipper by contacting your nearest realtor. A flipper is someone who stands at a major intersection and flips a "For Lease/Rental" sign in order to attract visitors to an open house or to a particular real estate listing. The hourly pay is at least the minimum wage. 7. Why not become a paid feeder servicing the disabled at nearby nursing, convalescent, assisted living/care centers and hospitals. It involves feeding food to patients who are unable to feed themselves. The starting rate is $8.00 per hour. The only downside is that one has to take precautions to wash one's hands after each feeding. A posting of your services [by a business card or flyer] on a reviewable bulletin board would be enough to generate customers. The paid feeder position is one of the fastest growing occupation at this time. Good luck!

do flashed phones work in new york?
its a palm treo and yes its for metro.. and im goin to new york in less than 2 weeks.
Cell Phones & Plans - 1 Answers

The short answer is yes. You can flash any type of phone. AT&T and T-Mobile for example are based on GSM which is a technology used around the world. Sprint, Verison, Cricket, Altel, MetroPCS and others use a wireless standard called CDMA that is only found in the U.S. for the most part. You need to clarify what network you are talking about. I will take a guess and say you are asking about Metro PCS. If this is the case then the answer is no. MetroPCS is switching to a newer technology and in some markets (New York, NY being one of them) they already implemented it. So it is not that the phone that wont work because it is flashed but because it is CDMA and they Metro PCS in NYC does not use CDMA. Please specify the network you are talking about to receive a better answer. Metro PCS in NYC uses AWS not standard CDMA so you would need a triband CDMA phone. You can flash any CDMA phone to Metro regardless if the idiots who work there say you can or can't (AWS for NYC area Metro Network). I know I have done it for friends even though I personally have AT&T. Update: Since you added what type of phone it is, I can tell you the answer is no. It has nothing to do with the phone being flashed. The problem as I described above is that Metro PCS in NYC uses AWS technology. Your phone has to support this wirless protocol and yours does not.

I have a California RN license but will work in new york. How do I get reciprocity while maintaining CA license?

Health Care - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :

Reciprocity agreements vary from state to state. The state where you are requesting the nursing license will determine what the reciprocity requirements are. Therefore, in order to find out how to obtain a New York RN license, with an already existing California license, you need to contact the New York State Board of Nursing. http://www.op.nysed.gov/nurse.htm When you apply for a professional license in another state, you have to meet that new states requirements. Sometimes its as simple as filling out a form and verifying that you in fact do have a license with your current state. Some states require that you take classes, or having specialized training. (I think that NY requires a child abuse prevention class.) While others may require you to re-take the nursing boards all over again. To find out what the requirements are, you need to contact the individual state. To make matters more complicated, a state (such as NY) may accept a California license, but may not accept a license in another state (let's say Alabama for example). A lot depends on score you received on the NCLEX exam, as different states have different requirements. With the shortage of nurses across the country though, the reciprocity agreements have been severaly relaxed. Usually, if you can verify that you have an active license, they will usually grant you a temporary permit while you are completing the paperwork or additional courses. But, for the specifics you need to contact the individual state. When you apply for a nursing license in NY you are not giving up your California license, as you can have both. At one time I held as many as four different state licenses. But, the hard part is in keeping all of those licenses active. Contact the New York State Board of Nursing, and look for their reciprocity requirements. GOOD LUCK!

How does living in New York affect your day to day life

How does living in New York affect your day to day life?
New York is a hectic place. People in New York work long hours, live near many different types of people, and don't usually live near nature, or in quiet, calm places. I'd like to hear from people in New York and out of New York about their experiences in New York. Do you find that people in New York tend to be less emotionally healthy or well-adjusted? Does living in New York affect people in negative ways, or is it just a culture like any other culture that people can either adjust to or dislike?
Psychology - 3 Answers

1 :
There's a lot of craziness. The lack of privacy and quiet is tough... if you travel up north for a good hour and a half though, you can get away from it all. There's no place like New York though. There's a little bit of everything there. It's just a matter of balance.
2 :
Right now I'm living in NYC, but I grew up about an hour north of here. In the city there is less privacy- there are crowds everywhere, it's kind of lonely even though you're surrounded by so many people, people are in their own world- some may consider this rude but that's just the way new yorkers are. However, I would say new yorkers are very well adjusted. They see so much on a daily basis and are exposed to so many different types of people, cultures, arts, and opinions. You really grow up fast here. You just have to be sure that you know how to manage your stress level because it is very fast paced. If someone were to just move here coming from an entirely different environment then yes it would take a while to get used to. Oh, and it's very expensive. But overall, an amazing city by far.
3 :
I agree with the response about coming from a different environment it is hard to cope with. Im originally from California and just moved here 2 weeks ago. When I first moved here it was CRAZY. People drive crazy, walk fast and always on a mission, food is expensive and the little things you need (like hangers) are a mission to find, you hear noises throughout the night, and pretty much walk everywhere you need to go. But its also a beautiful city. So much to do, you would rather be anywhere then at home watching TV. And its fascinating because everyplace delivers practically and you are always seeing new places and things you didn't even know existed. I'm still getting used to it, but overall love it and hope to stay here. You do have to adjust to the lifestyle, but once you do it's worth it. Guess that's why people work such long hours and so much because they love the city they live in. I think the people here *may* be lacking on a little bit of sleep (or maybe that's just me since ive moved lol) but if anything they seem more healthy because of all the activity they do on a daily basis. I do think that this city isn't for everyone. If you don't love people (or at least craziness) or the city life, you would probably never adjust and dislike it. But its crazy, it's like each day is a new adventure.

3 :
You and 1,500,000 others want the same thing, but it's not impossible. It helps if you're gorgeous and charming. And if you know someone it helps. The job is not so hard to find, but accomodation in NYC is the hard part. If you know someone you can stay with, you're halfway there, but that's not so easy in NYC because apartments are small and space is tight.
4 :
Aliens in the U.S. as visitors are prohibited from working. Your visa was issued to you so that you could have a vacation in the U.S, not to be employed in the U.S. At the time of your visa application, you were carefully screened and questioned about any intention you may have had about working in the U.S. If you had revealed that you wanted to work in the U.S., the visa never would have been issued. When it was issued, you were informed that you cannot work in the U.S. As a well educated woman, you are well aware of the restrictions on visitor visas. You are not eligible for any work permit as a visitor.

Do you have a highly advanced degree such as a doctorate in a skill needed here in America that has employers lining up to hire you and sponsor you for a visa? Do you have an immediate relative such as a US citizen spouse, parent, or sibling who can petition on your behalf for an immigrant visa? Do you have at the minimum $1,000,000 to invest here in the US? If not, you have zero chance of finding work here in America legally, aside from winning the green card lottery.

You need an employer to sponsor you. That won't be possible unless you are highly educated and skilled in a profession that is needed in the US.

Yes, if they are dual voltage. And you will need a plug adaptor.
2 :
They will work with a plug adaptor. You wont need to worry about the voltage if you dont have dual because their voltage is lower than UK so it wont damage them. It will take longer for them to heat up and they might not get as hot. Hair dryers are the same and they just blow slower
3 :
Yes they are dual voltage but an adapter is required, get a universal one or one specific to this plug: http://www.trip-extras.com/usa scroll to the pics of the plugs

You will definitely need a adapter for the plug. And, unless the straightener is dual-voltage, you will also need a converter.

Yeah you definitley can work in NYC if you live in New Jersey! All you would have to do to make it easier for you to work in the city is to take a train because it saves less gas and money for you and is a better way of transportation in the city, anyway.
3 :
Yes, thousands of people live in NJ and commute to jobs in NYC, but, it's a state-tax nightmare, and you might get double-taxed on your earnings, from both states, PLUS, don't forget that New York City charges a CITY tax, too!! So, take all that into account when you're considering your salary requirements, because they might take a LOT out in taxes when you do that. Good luck!... ☺
4 :
I do it everyday! I am a NYC native that moved to Northern NJ and now I commute from there to my job in Manhattan. As long as you can get to public transportation (NJ Transit train or bus or the Path train), you should be fine. To add to what Duncan said above, you don't always get double-taxed. It depends on the company that you work for.
5 :
I live in NJ, worked in NYC as a Judicial state worker, had to pay NY city and state taxes, as well as NJ state taxes. If you decide to live in NJ, also factor in commuting costs relative to where you work in NYC, i.e. I commuted by NJ Transit train to Hoboken, then took PATH to the WTC, then walked to work.

Once the court declares you emancipated, you are on your own. Your parents do not have to provide you with one penny. Do not expect to collect welfare because NYC closed that loophole years ago.

I believe you can but you will need to get your working papers. Ask your school guidance counselor for the proper forms. You will need to fill them out and have your doctor perform a physical exam on you to prove that your'e healthy enough work. However, at this age, you are only allowed to work when school is not in session.
2 :
I know that supermarkets hire starting at age 14 as do many fast food places such as Burger King. I know that it doesn't seem all that glamorous, but it will provide some spending money and you will get your feet wet and gain experience for jobs later on. Babysitting is also a great idea if you like children. I used to babysit for $8 an hour, which is more than you will make in most stores. And half the time that I babysat at night, I was watching TV while the children slept.
