Streets are numeric from South to North and Avenues from East to West.

NYC is on a grid.. well except a couple of areas. Most of NYC is composed of horizontal lines and vertical lines. The horizontal lines are streets. When going north, the street numbers increase. They stay consistent on both Upper East Side and Upper West Side (Both sides of central park). The vertical lines are avenues. It goes from 1st Avenue to 12th Avenue... starting with 1st avenue which is on east side of the map, going to 12th avenue which is on west side of map. There are also other avenues in between, but those are the very basic ones.

Ugh it is soooo complicated in NYC. But the streets pretty much go in order like 42 street is parallel to 43 street, but intersecting with them could be 2 and 3. lol i don't know if this will help much, when we went, it was a school field trip and they gave us a printed map, which i lost. :( hope this link helps at least a bit! http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl :)
